About the Heritage Project

The Emsworth Heritage project, a new venture for Emsworth, is at an early and formative stage.  Working closely with Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Emsworth Museum and other local partners  the main aims of the organisation will be:

To ensure the long term preservation and maintenance of "The Terror" - Emsworth's only surviving oyster boat

To establish a Heritage Trail around the village of Emsworth based on the nineteenth century and early twentieth century oyster trade, fishing and related industries for which Emsworth was once famous

To develop the educational use of the Terror and Heritage Trail for residents and visitors.

Follow the Oyster Trail

October 25th 2009

Q Guided walk starting from Emsworth Museum. Oysters have been fished in Emsworth harbour for centuries. At the  height of the industry (second half of the 19th century), almost 5  million oysters a year came out of  Emsworth and almost half the  locally employed population earned their living from fishing and the  industries that supported it, such as boat building. Find out about  this fascinating piece of history as well as having a pleasant walk  around the “Emsworth Oyster Trail”.

As these walks have proved to be very popular advance booking is essential –   telephone 01243 378091

More about the history of The Terror

22 October  Emsworth Maritime and Historical Trust: Talk by John Tweddell “The Rise and Fall of Emsworth Oysters”, 7.30pm, Lumley Room, Emsworth Community Centre, Church Path. Admission Members £1. Non Members £2. All Welcome.

Whilst the restoration of the Terror was undertaken by Dolphin Quay Boat Yard under the auspicious of Chichester Harbour Conservancy, supported with Lottery Funding, the initial finances for The Emsworth Heritage project have become available by the generous donation of the profits from the two Emsworth Cook Books published in 2004 and 2005 by the authors, John Tweddell and Elaine Connolly.  It is anticipated that the continued development of the project will be possible through the support of individuals and local organisations and businesses.
